Hi everybody!
I'd like to start this group with outlining the problematic things in moscow.
What are those things in moscow which are not good/not enough good and which are that way due to centralized organizational management or due to the absence of community?
What is constantly bugging you when you deal with the city?
What Blows and How To Fix It
By backspaced_boyLet's look at it in terms of WB (What Blows?) and WCBD (What Can Be Done?)
Firstly, Moscow is foreigner-unfriendly. Los Russos love their weird characters of course, but how about putting some notes in plain English around the city out of sheer mercy?
(WB) Everything you read on the street is in cyrillics.
(WCBD) Free obligatory courses on reading Russian characters ran by a group of volunteers in Domodedovo (No sir, you can't have your luggage yet. This reads "sch" not "ts". Try again).
OK, I'm kidding. How about getting someone like Artyom Gorbunov together with someone in charge of city planning in Moscow Duma and seeing to it that they come to an agreement? Anyone well-connected here?
Secondly, watching an non-dubbed foreign movie in Moscow is a quest for the Holy Grail. There is 35mm cinema, of course, but it appears to be the only one, and besides, they show subtitles. (And I won't elaborate on the gaping absence of B-movie theatres in this part of the globe).
(WB) Almost all movies shown in Moscow cinemas are dubbed into Russian.
(WCBD) I'm lost here. Perhaps there should be a way of letting the big guys behind the movie industry know that non-dubbed movies are in fact in demand. Some kind of poll/survey/focus group might help.
Thirdly, there are no quick service (as opposed to fast food, i.e. yucky) vegetarian cafes. The only affordable veggie spot downtown I can think of is Jagannath, but it doesn't serve takeaway, and you are limited to a number of dishes available on each day as opposed to creating one's meal from scratch as suggested by i.e. Maoz Vegetarian. Can't we have a variety of small ayurvedic/krishnaist/macrobiotic etc cafes serving various, delicious, convenient food?
(WB) Lack of quick service healthy food cafes.
(WCBD) I can't see any other way than just opening one (or five), or at least giving one's opulent friend an idea of such a smart investment.
More coming soon.
